How to Measure a Wall for Repointing

Accurate mortar estimates start with accurate site measurements. Follow this trade guide before calculating.

1. Measuring Gross Wall Dimensions

Measure the horizontal length and vertical height of each wall section in metres or feet. For multi-storey walls or staggered elevations, divide the facade into rectangular sections.

2. Deducting Openings

Measure width and height of all windows, doors, structural arches, and louvres. Deduct their combined area from the gross wall area to obtain true net masonry area.

3. Measuring Joint Face Width

Use a precision rule or gauge to measure the visible gap between bricks at several locations across the wall to obtain an honest average face width.

4. Measuring Raking Depth

Old decayed mortar should be raked back until sound bedding is reached, with a minimum depth of twice the joint width (at least 15–20 mm). Measure depth with a depth gauge or marked chisel.
