Standard: 10 mm (3/8 in) for modern brickwork; 6–8 mm for fine ashlar stone.

Repointing Fill Depth: The clean recessed void depth from the masonry face that is packed with new mortar (standard industry practice calls for at least 2× joint width, typically 15–25 mm).

Frequently Asked Questions About Pointing & Mortar Estimation

How deep should mortar joints be raked out before repointing?
Industry standards (SPAB, Historic England, and BS 8000-3) recommend raking out decayed mortar to a minimum depth of twice the joint width, or at least 15 to 20 mm (5/8 to 3/4 inch), whichever is greater. Raking too shallow causes "feather-edge" pointing that quickly cracks and pops out under freeze-thaw cycles.
Why does this calculator calculate volume instead of guessing weight directly?
A mortar joint is a physical three-dimensional void (length × width × depth). The volume of this space is an invariant geometric fact. Weight, however, depends entirely on the binder-to-sand ratio, moisture content, and binder type. Showing volume by default guarantees transparency, and we only convert to bags when an exact, source-backed material profile is selected.
What waste allowance should I choose for standard brick repointing?
For smooth, consistent brickwork, a 10% allowance is the recommended trade baseline. If working on weathered historic brick with deep voids, 15% is safer. For rough random stone masonry where joint depths vary significantly, 20% waste is standard.
